‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Star Rob McElhenney Files to Legally Change Name to ‘Rob Mac’
American actor and producer Rob McElhenney, best known for his role in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, has officially filed to change his name to “Rob Mac.” The decision comes amid growing international recognition and business ventures, particularly through his co-ownership of Wrexham AFC and investments in South American football clubs. The simplified name aims to avoid the frequent mispronunciations of his original surname.
McElhenney has often been the subject of confusion regarding the pronunciation of his last name. Even his business partner and fellow actor Ryan Reynolds once created a humorous musical segment to help fans say it correctly. But now, McElhenney has decided that it’s time for a more practical, accessible identity—especially as his profile continues to expand beyond entertainment and into global sports and media.
However, the decision hasn’t gone down well with everyone. His wife Kaitlin Olson and their children, who also share the McElhenney surname, are reportedly unhappy about the proposed change. Despite initial concerns about family legacy, Rob discovered that some of his relatives had already considered altering the surname or done so in the past, which helped him move forward with confidence.
If the change is approved, fans may soon see the updated name “Rob Mac” featured in his popular series Welcome to Wrexham and future episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
